notes

Embellished with a delicate white slip and intricate sgraffito detailing, the handmade Beauty and Terror Engraved Dish is an exquisite piece of artisanal craft, made from terracotta. The poetry is from Rainer Maria Rilke’s timeless ‘Book of Hours’: “Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going, no feeling is final.”

Insights

The technique ‘sgraffito’ occurs by applying layers of tinted plaster in various colours onto a moistened surface, before scratching into the surface to unveil parts of the underlying layer. This term originates from the Italian verb ‘graffiare’, meaning ‘to scratch’.
