Every piece of delicate embroidery, rich tapestry or hand sewn piece of clothing starts with a piece of thread, and ‘Bobbins Study’ is an ode to their variety of diverse, creative possibilities. Constructed in impressionistic, contrasting blocks of vibrant colour, this composition offers the nuances of a still life study that prompts us to contemplate its apparent simplicity, to consider the symbolism and imagination beneath.

Inspired by Cezanne’s quote; “The painter gives concrete expression to his sensations, his perceptions, by means of line and colour”, Berkin is a figurative artist working with the principle that drawing builds a foundation for a successful painting. In the artist’s words, colour should be used to enhance the organisation and definition of observed space and form.

With a background in science, Berkin is particularly interested in visual perception; understanding how our brains translate the information before us when painting from life, and the subsequent observations one makes of this representation.
