Classic Brass Teddy Bear
Margarete Steiff founded the company in 1880 producing stuffed animals in Germany. She was joined by her nephew Richard Steiff, who, in 1902, designed a toy bear made of mohair, and called him Teddy in reference to American President Theodore Roosevelt, who had refused to shoot a tethered bear during a hunting trip. Steiff teddies and soft toys today bear (sorry!) the same high standards of quality, with each toy handmade and finished with a yellow ear tag for authenticity. They are designed as heirloom toys and are much favoured by collectors as their value often increases with age.
