This dwarf Clematis Bourbon (Evipo018) with its dramatically large, star-shaped flowers, was bred by the famous Raymond Evison Nurseries. The vibrant red petal margins, which shade into a dark purple, are set off by a contrasting gold centre. C. Bourbon’s restrained size makes it perfect for statement planting.

Clematis have their roots in the Far East. The first example, C.Viticella, arrived in Europe in the mid-16th century. Two centuries later, theVictorians bred numerous varieties and their popularity continues. The native climber is C.vitalba, a familiar sight in the autumn hedgerow, the fluffy seed heads explaining the traditional name: Old Man’s Beard.

  • Alternatively layer stones on the surface of the soil, which protects the roots from the sun and from drying out.
