notes

Embellished with a delicate white slip and intricate sgraffito detailing, the handmade Long May We Live Birds Engraved Dish is made from terracotta. The piece features a rhyme from a 17th century English cream ware mug that reads “Long may we live, happy may we be, bleft with content and from misfortune free”, in amongst a pattern of fig fruits and overarching leaves.

Insights

The technique ‘sgraffito’ occurs by applying layers of tinted plaster in various colours onto a moistened surface, before scratching into the surface to unveil parts of the underlying layer. This term originates from the Italian verb ‘graffiare’, meaning ‘to scratch’.
