The luscious leaves of this evergreen shrub act as a perfect foil for the clusters of exquisitely scented tubular flowers that appear in the spring. Rounded in shape and slow growing, the undemanding Osmanthus is perfect for a woodland garden or makes lovely scented hedging. Recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.

A native of China, Osmanthus is also very much at home in the British climate (plant in spring if you are in a cold area). This variety is one of the shrubs named after Arthur Burkwood, a notable 20th-century nurseryman who, with his brother Albert, founded Parkwood Nursery in Kingston upon Thames.

Flowers: Small, white tubular flowers appear in clusters in spring followed by sparse black, inedible fruits

  • Moist, well drained soil
  • Full sun or partial shade
  • All aspects
  • Sheltered position

This undemanding shrub needs little attention or pruning unless used as hedging to keep in shape. Remove dead, damaged or diseased stems in spring following flowering.
