Artichoke Green Globe is notable for its tall stems which bear large dark green heads against silvery foliage. These globe shaped flower heads are harvested for use as a vegetable while still in bud, but if left on the plant, they mature into attractive purple blossoms.  
Insights

Grown in peat free compost in a biodegradable pot made from waste coir and natural latex. Remove plant from pot or cut/tear away some of the coir if the plant is well rooted and hard to remove.

Care
  • Pop the discarded coir pot in the green bin, leave out for birds to use for nesting, use as mulch or add to compost heap
  • Make sure the Artichoke has plenty of space to grow – avoid frost prone or waterlogged sites
  • Water in dry spells – lack of water will affect size and number of buds
  • During the first year it is advisable to remove any flower stalks to allow the plant to focus its energy on becoming established, harvesting buds in the second year
  • In autumn, prune off the faded foliage and lay over the crown to protect the plant during winter- in very cold areas a layer of mulch or fleece is advisable
  • Coir pots are supplied by one specific village producer in Sri Lanka. They have built a school, old people's home and extension to the local medical centre over the years from the proceeds of coir pot production
