Ideal for herbaceous borders, Alchemilla Mollis is grown for its foliage and flowers. Its round leaves with scalloped and toothed edges, are prettily folded and covered in velvety down. The decorative foliage forms a mound of leaves from which delicate sprays of flowers emerge, to tumble romantically over the edges of summer lawns or pathways.

The name Alchemilla mollis derives from the Greek words meaning ‘magic herb’, inspired by the magical way droplets of rain collect in the centres of the velvety leaves, giving the appearance of glistening cabochons. Colloquially known as Lady’s Mantle.

  • Deciduous
  • Hardy
  • Flowering period July to September
  • Any moist, well-drained soil
  • Any aspect
  • Full sun or partial shade

Alchemilla mollis needs little attention. Cut flowers in summer for arrangements or leave to self-seed. (Alchemilla seedlings will appear in the surrounding area the following year.) Cut foliage and flowers back as they become untidy in late summer and more foliage will appear.
