notes

'Still Life with Flowers' by Alfred Wolmark is a radiant oil on canvas, celebrating colour and form with expressive confidence. Bold yellow blooms burst from a rounded earthenware vase, their energy heightened by vigorous brushwork and a richly colour background of greens and shadowy blues. A leading figure in early British modernism, Wolmark's painterly style here borders on abstraction, creating a piece that would suit spaces that favour bold character.

Artist

Alfred Wolmark (1871–1961) was a Polish-born Post-Impressionist painter, portraitist, and graphic designer, known as a pioneer of the New Movement in Art. After brief study at the Royal Academy Schools, he exhibited from 1901 to 1936. A 1911 trip to Brittany exposed him to modern French painting, prompting a bold use of colour that earned him the nickname “The Colour King.” His vibrant style drew comparisons to Van Gogh, and his work is held in many major collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, London.
