notes

Originating in the dreamy warmth of the Canary Islands, this is an unusual and attractive perennial. Beautifully defined, almost terracotta-coloured flowers are held in spires on deeply tinted stems. Unlike most Foxgloves, the prettily shaped upper lip of the flower is longer than that of the lower.

Insights

Described as half hardy (reflecting its origination from hotter climes), it is however fine if planted in a sheltered position and due to its compact form, will not dominate a sunny border. It also looks beautiful planted in a container on a warm terrace.

Care

The main foxglove flower is called the ‘king’ flower; cut this back after flowering to encourage lower shoots to bloom, but before doing so allow the bees to do their busy work. Highly toxic by ingestion. Wear gloves and wash hands after handling.
