- Sow: Late January – June (under cover or outdoors)
- Plant Out: Late April – July
- Harvest: June – September
- Soil: Fertile, moist but well‑drained
- Aspect: Full sun
Sowing:
- Under cover: Sow in seed trays or modules at around 13 °C; when seedlings show the first true leaves, thin or transplant into larger cells before hardening off.
- Direct: Sow into shallow drills 2 cm deep in a fine seedbed when conditions allow.
Spacing: Transplant or thin to 30 cm (12″) apart between plants and 30–38 cm (12–15″) between rows.
Firm the soil around young plants to remove air pockets. Keep well‑weeded and watered during dry spells. To extend your season, cabbages can also be sown as early as January under cover or in a greenhouse tunnel for an earlier harvest the following spring. Remove outer leaves as heads develop to focus growth.
