- Sow: March – April (outdoors) or all year round in pots/windowsills
- Harvest: June - August
- Perennial Herb
- Soil: Fertile, moist, well‑drained
- Aspect: Full sun to partial shade
- Sowing: Sow seeds about 0.5 cm deep in moist soil or compost, either direct outdoors in spring or in pots/containers any time with good light. Thin seedlings to 15–20 cm (6–8″) apart once established to allow clumps to develop.
Chives thrive with moderate moisture and benefit from regular harvesting, snip leaves close to the base once they reach about 15 cm (6″) tall. Cutting regularly encourages fresh new growth; don’t cut lower than 5 cm above soil to keep plants vigorous. They’ll return year after year from the same clumps.
