Zanthoxylum piperitum ‘Kuro-fune’, 4L
Hailing from Mt Fuji in Japan, this deciduous culinary shrub bears purple aromatic, pinnate leaves on spiny stems. It can form a dome shaped tree over time, and is highly decorative, producing panicles of discreet, cup shaped yellow/green flowers in summer, and yellow leaves in autumn. This is a male variety so does not produce the reddish fruits containing the black, peppery seeds used in Asian cooking.
