Meet Hook Norton Pottery

For many years, our Toasted Stoneware range has proved to be an ever-popular and enduring addition to our Interiors collection. Beautifully hand-thrown, the rustic, earthy designs are the product of a close collaboration between our Creative Director, Louise Johnson, and Russell Collins, founder of Hook Norton Pottery.

Born and educated in London, founder Russell Collins trained as a teacher and began his professional career in Chichester, West Sussex. It was during his teacher training, however, that he was first introduced to the art of pottery. Inspired to pursue his new passion, Russell left teaching to join Harrow Art School's ground-breaking pottery course. After completing the programme, he was invited to join the faculty as a lecturer, dividing his time between Harrow and other art schools over a distinguished 25-year teaching career.

It was during this time, in 1967, that Russell established his first workshop and studio in Oxfordshire. He later moved to larger premises in Hook Norton in 1969 and again in 1978.

Russell’s stoneware creations soon gained both national and international acclaim, appearing in major department stores and galleries throughout the UK, as well as in leading hotels, restaurants, and airports both domestically and overseas.

Over the years, Russell has established a very definite and recognisable pottery style. All of his work is reduction-fired at 1,300°C, producing a highly vitrified and durable finish. This process ensures that each piece is safe for everyday domestic use, with no metal release.

Having mastered all the technical aspects of ceramics – including clay preparation, glazing, and kiln firing – Russell has an intimate and extensive knowledge of the materials required to produce a wide range of ceramic work. He is continually researching and refining glaze recipes and clay bodies to achieve the highest standards. These clays and glazes have all been tested and certified by the British Ceramic Research Association.

Recently downsizing to a smaller, oak-framed, and eco-friendly workspace, this new premises allows Russell to concentrate on developing more bespoke, individual pieces for private clients, galleries, museums, and other exhibitions, with the freedom to explore new themes and ideas.

Furthermore, this reduced working schedule allows Russell more time to dedicate to giving talks, demonstrations, and lessons. It also provides him with time to help make pots with his grandson, who now has a pottery workshop of his own.
