Corydalis calycosa is a less familiar perennial but deserves a place in every cottage garden border. Clump forming, the fern-like foliage is highly attractive, with refined, deeply cut leaves held bushily on stems. From May these stems bear tubular, spurred flowers in a wonderfully vibrant blue. Not only are they striking but they are also pleasantly scented.

Insights
Cordalis, curiously part of the poppy family, are widespread but the majority of the species are found in China and Tibet. The name is derived from the Greek word, Korydallos, meaning crested lark, inspired by the shape of the flowers. Also pleasing is the fact that it is a welcome pollinator for bees.
Details
The true blue flowers of this perennial appear in late May and will continue until late July.
