notes

Admired for their delicately-striped elliptical leaves, trailing Tradescantias make for the ideal hanging plant, growing rapidly and exquisitely with long cascading vines. In amongst this bush-like houseplant are distinct shades of green, pink, white, and purple hues, hence its name, ‘Quadricolor’.

Insights

Native to Mexico, the Tradescantia carries succulent-like leaves due to their ability to store large amounts of water. Named after John Tradescant Senior, a gardener employed by King Charles I, a botanist and explorer, the plant became popular in the courts of Europe by 1662 due to the discovery that it was incredibly easy to propagate.

Plant Care

A position with indirect light is ideal, if too dark the leaves will become lank and revert to a singular green shade. Avoid standing in water, the soil can be left to dry out between watering. If the leaf edges are brown, humidity is too low.
