- Sow: April – May (direct outdoors once frost risk has passed)
- Flowers: July – September
- Hardy annual
- Soil: Well‑drained, fertile soil
- Aspect: Full sun
- Direct outdoors: Sow thinly in drills about 45 cm (18in) apart into a fine, prepared seedbed.
- Indoors: For earlier blooms, sow individually in pots under cover at 20–25 °C, then harden off before planting out after all risk of frost has passed.
- Thinning: When seedlings are established, thin to approximately 45 cm (18in) between plants.
Sunflowers thrive with plenty of sunshine and regular watering to keep soil evenly moist (but not waterlogged). Taller plants may benefit from light staking in exposed sites to support the heavy blooms. Regular watering during dry spells will maintain strong growth and vibrant blooms.
