Features
A compact, cascading Japanese Maple with finely dissected, deep red foliage that holds its colour from spring to autumn. Acer palmatum 'Garnet' brings architectural grace and long-lasting colour to containers or sheltered borders.
First developed in the Netherlands in the 1930s, 'Garnet' is part of the dissectum group — prized for its lace-like leaves and low, domed form. Its name reflects the rich, jewel-toned foliage that makes it a dramatic addition to any garden.
- Flowers: April–May (inconspicuous)
- Hardy
- RHS Award of Garden Merit recipient
- Soil: Moist but well-drained; neutral to slightly acidic
- Aspect: Sheltered; east, west or south-facing
- Sun levels: Full sun or partial shade — best with some protection from hot midday sun and wind
Once established, 'Garnet' requires little intervention. Water regularly during dry spells, particularly when grown in containers. Apply mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Minimal pruning needed — shape only in late winter, removing dead or crossing wood as necessary.
