Despite bearing the rather charming common name of Bastard Balm, Melittis 'Royal Velvet Distinction' still manages to delight. This herbaceous perennial is clump forming, its scalloped green foliage and stems are covered in tiny hairs and emit a slight scent, reminiscent of honey. The flowers are orchid like, with a white upper lip and a dark purple lower lip acting as a landing strip for bees, which love this nectar/ pollen rich flower.
