In 1933, Alfonso Bialetti invented the Moka Express, a simple way to make rich, café style coffee at home using a stovetop espresso maker, whose shape was inspired by his wife’s plissé skirts. But it was Renato Bialetti, his son, who really turned it into a household icon after taking over the company in the post-war years. With clever marketing—including the famous “L’omino con i baffi” (the little man with the moustache) logo inspired by Renato himself—he made the Moka pot synonymous with Italian culture. When he died aged 93, his ashes were placed in an oversized Moka pot!
