notes

The tall spires of this hardy biennial Digitalis purpurea Sutton's Apricot reach over a metre in height and so are perfect for the back of a sunny border. The subtle shade of creamy pink flowers on mid-green leaves makes it a gentle foil for other more stridently coloured herbaceous plants such as peonies.

Insights

Foxgloves are a familiar and beloved sight in cottage gardens where they punctuate the herbaceous border with picturesque spires of colour. The individual thimbles grow to 4cm, their attractively marked interiors are highly attractive to native pollinators.

Care

The main foxglove flower is called the ‘king’ flower; cut this back after flowering to encourage lower shoots to bloom, but before doing so allow the bees to do their busy work. Highly toxic by ingestion. Wear gloves and wash hands after handling.
