Details
  • Sow: February – August (indoors or under cover)
  • Flowers: Typically from mid‑summer (July onwards)
  • Hardy shrub once established
Planting
  • Soil: Well‑drained, fertile soil
  • Aspect: Full sun
  • Sow seeds on the surface of fine seed compost, lightly covering with a sprinkling of finer compost or vermiculite. Maintain warmth (about 21–25 °C) until germination, often 14–21 days. Transplant seedlings when large enough into trays or small pots then gradually acclimatise before planting out.
  • Spacing: Plant out about 30–45 cm (12–18″) apart to allow airflow and room for bush formation.
Care

Once established, lavender is drought tolerant and thrives on minimal moisture, water sparingly once roots are set. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and prevent woodiness. Dead stems should be avoided when pruning to encourage healthy regrowth.
