Lavandula originates from the Western Mediterranean, Middle East and India but it was introduced to Britain early and by the 16th century was common in gardens. The name derives from the Latin to wash - ‘lavare’ - because the Romans used it extensively to scent water. Since then essential oil from lavender has been used medicinally and culinarily.

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood. Ensure good drainage, especially in winter, to prevent root rot. Hardy, but less so than other English lavenders so protect in harsh winters.
