A native of China, Osmanthus is also very much at home in the British climate (plant in spring if you are in a cold area). This variety is one of the shrubs named after Arthur Burkwood, a notable 20th-century nurseryman who, with his brother Albert, founded Parkwood Nursery in Kingston upon Thames.
Flowers: Small, white tubular flowers appear in clusters in spring followed by sparse black, inedible fruits

This undemanding shrub needs little attention or pruning unless used as hedging to keep in shape. Remove dead, damaged or diseased stems in spring following flowering.
