Features

notes

Clipped into a mini standard, Photinia serrulata Red Robin, becomes hugely versatile and would become a point of interest in many different gardens. The young shoots of this evergreen shrub are a beguiling bright red and as they mature change through bronze to green. Plant to add height to a border or paired in decorative containers.

Insights

Photinia Red Robins are related to the malus family (apple trees). If left to flower they do go on to produce small berries that are appreciated by native birds such as thrushes. It is a recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence.

Details

Photonias have copious creamy white flowers, but because this is a standard that has been clipped into shape it may not flower until next year and only then if left unclipped.

  • Full sun or partial shade
  • Container
Care

Photinias are very hardy and grow vigorously. Prune hard in the spring after the frosts and two or three times during the growing season to retain its lollipop shape and encourage bright red foliage. Mulch in spring.
