Providing the most attractive evergreen ground cover, Vinca Ralph Shugert has yellow margined leaves that form a glossy mat, perfect for underplanting. Borne close to the foliage, the violet-blue flowers provide a brilliant splash of colour, flowering intermittently from spring until autumn. A recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence.

Vinca, colloquially known as Periwinkle, has a reputation for being invasive but this variegated variety has better manners but is still robust. Native to Southern Europe and Africa, Vinca was taken to America for its medicinal properties. This variety was discovered in 1986 by David Mackenzie who named it after a fellow Michigan plantsman.

Flowers: Brilliant violet blue flowers bloom intermittently from April to September.

  • Moist, well drained soil
  • Full sun or partial shade
  • South or west facing
  • Sheltered position

Vinca’s are hardy and need little attention but If the groundcover is exceeding its boundaries, cut shoots back in spring.
