Getting to Know: Bungalow
Working with some of India’s finest block printers, Danish brand Bungalow is celebrated for its beautiful range of hand-printed textiles and paper goods. From floral tablecloths to Christmas decorations, each piece is carefully crafted using traditional techniques, designed to be cherished for years to come. We spoke to Bungalow to find out the story behind the brand.
Bungalow began in 2004 as a small passion project founded by Creative Director, Minna Hildebrandt. Minna spent many years travelling throughout India and South Asia and studied in the Himalayas as part of her bachelor’s degree. Over the years, India has become Minna’s second home - her husband is from Kerala in South India, and together they regularly spend time with family there.
From the very beginning, Minna was fascinated by India's rich traditions, vibrant colours and remarkable craftsmanship. She was particularly drawn to the fact that every handmade product carries a story and reflects the skill of the people behind it. Traditional motifs such as paisleys, florals and intricate borders continue to inspire the collections today.
One craft, however, captured her heart from the start: block printing. The beauty of hand-carved wooden blocks, combined with the artistry and patience required to create each textile, was love at first sight.
While Scandinavian design is often associated with minimalism and restraint, Bungalow brings a slightly different perspective. Our Danish heritage is reflected in the way we create collections that complement rather than compete with a classic Scandinavian home.
Our products are floral, somewhat “romantic” and colourful, but they are always designed with versatility in mind. We believe that even the most traditional interior can benefit from a small touch of the unexpected. You don't need to embrace an entire collection - sometimes a single cushion, a tablecloth or a figurine is enough to add personality and a fresh perspective.
Over the past 22 years, we have learned that our customers truly appreciate the authenticity and craftsmanship behind our products. The artisanal details that we love so much are also what makes our collections special to our customers. In a world increasingly dominated by mass production, more customers are seeking special, handcrafted items that reflect individuality and quality.
If we had to choose just one, it would be our block‑printed textiles. From tablecloths and napkins to cushions and garden textiles, each piece is created using traditional hand block‑printing techniques that require remarkable skill, patience and precision.
The subtle variations, small irregularities and human presence behind each piece are what give our products character. Rather than striving for perfection, we celebrate individuality. Our hope is that these pieces become part of people's homes for many years and perhaps even find their way through generations to come.
We have built long-standing relationships with many of our manufacturers and artisans, some of whom we have worked with for decades. Together, we continue to preserve traditional craftsmanship while navigating the increasingly complex demands of modern production. Supporting these partnerships is an important part of who we are and what we stand for.
Our creative team in Copenhagen works closely with our designers in India to develop new patterns and motifs. Once the designs have been approved, the colour work begins. Together with our buyers, we explore countless colour combinations before gradually refining the collection into its final form. Many of these prints then find their way across multiple categories, from home textiles to our cotton paper collection.
