Introduction to Adaptogens

What is an ‘adaptogen’?

In some ancient cultures, human life was seen as inextricably bound with the natural world, where all living organisms reacted and supported each other on a cellular level. Sadly, this value has eroded over the years, and we can witness the environmental impacts this disconnect has triggered. There is now a movement to renew the significance of the plant kingdom in our psyche, and adaptogens can help towards a greater understanding of plant medicine and its role in our lives.

Adaptogens are compounds found in plants, herbs and fungi that can help the body adapt after periods of stress or instability. Plant medicine has been used as a tonic around the world for thousands of years; for example, in Chinese herbal medicine they’re called qi tonics. The interesting note about adaptogens is that they work differently for each individual- as they align what is needed in the body. By increasing our resistance to stress and regaining a state of equilibrium, body, mind and spirit are in harmony, increasing wellbeing and longevity.

FAQs
Can anyone use them?

If you have a medical condition, or are taking medication, it is wise to consult with your doctor before using adaptogens (particularly in the case of diabetes and blood pressure) as they can interact with medicines. Adaptogens are also not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.

How do you take an adaptogen?

Adaptogens are supplemental, so will not ‘cure’ anything. They also can affect people in different ways, with some people responding faster than others, or sometimes taking weeks to show any effect. Generally taken as a powder added to soup or as a tea, they can also be consumed as a capsule or tincture.

Do they have any side effects?

Further research is needed to establish more data on their efficacy, and as with any supplement or herbal medicine, reactions can vary from person to person.
