notes

'Joan on Bed' by Lawrence James Isherwood is a striking oil on board piece, rendered with loose, expressive brushwork and a bold, intuitive palette. Isherwood's approach lends emotional depth to the scene, as a reclining nude figure rests against a backdrop of deep emeralds, blues and ochres with characteristic rawness. This artwork would suit a confident interior, perhaps a reading room or study, where its painterly energy can be appreciated.

Artist

James Lawrence Isherwood (British, 1917–1989) was a prolific Impressionist and Expressionist painter from Wigan, Lancashire. Best known for his vivid portrayals of northern industrial landscapes, he brought energy and colour to every canvas. He studied under French Impressionist Adolphe Valette (also mentor to L. S. Lowry), who praised Isherwood as “most likely to follow in my footsteps.” His bold, lively style remains distinctive, capturing the spirit and rhythm of mid-century Britain with remarkable immediacy.
