Fruit Market Lemons reflects Diana Tonnison’s love of visiting local markets while abroad; she says, ‘they tell you so much about the lifestyles and artistic traditions of the country’. Here the irregularly modelled lemons, placed on a Moroccan blue background, have a compelling, pitted texture with a subtle green tint adding depth to the citrus yellow of the fruit.

Diana fulfilled her early ambition to study fashion at Central St Martin’s. Having graduated, her skill in textiles led her to work in the fashion houses of Missoni (Italy) and Bill Gibb in London. Her career took her to Hong Kong and New York. In 2007, however, she changed tack and launched her ceramics business. Her success in this field has earnt her numerous international commissions, much acclaim and many awards.

Diana’s remarkable use of colour is testament to her experience and recalls the European tradition of Majolica ware. But her sensibility to the clay is innate and produces art that is realistic yet highly expressive. In addition to the perceptive modelling and painting of her work, her discriminating use of glaze adds impact: the high lustre on a pomegranate or raku craquelure on a mushroom.
