From high summer into early autumn, the purple-washed, erect stems of Astrantia major Sparkling Stars Red produce a welcome injection of colour to the border. Pincushion-like umbels of pink flowers, surrounded by prominent, purple-tipped, burgundy bracts are marvellously refined in their detail and attract native pollinators.

Astrantias are clump-forming herbaceous perennials that have been cultivated in Britain since the 16th century and have numerous common names, such as melancholy gentleman, Hattie's pincushion and the more well known masterwort
