notes

Designed to inspire newcomers to the art of beekeeping, the Buzz Box set includes everything you need to begin the journey with confidence. At its heart is a UK National Beehive, the most popular and user-friendly hive in the country, trusted by both bees and beekeepers alike. The set also includes all the essential equipment: a protective suit, gloves, hive tool, bee smoker, and feeder, making the process simple, safe, and enjoyable- all you need are the bees!

Insights

With honeybees facing ever-increasing pressures from habitat loss, climate change, and disease, it’s more important than ever to create the right conditions for colonies to survive and thrive. In the 1950s, there were around 80,000 registered beekeepers in the UK, but that number fell dramatically to just 9,000 by 2000. Although the figure has since risen to around 46,000, the future of these vital pollinators still depends on our continued support and care.

The Hive

Set is delivered flat-packed and includes the following:

  • The Brood Box (where the Queen lays eggs to keep the colony populated)
  • 10 x Brood Frames & Wax Foundation (to go in the Brood Box)
  • 2 x Supers (where the bees make and store honey)
  • 20 x Super Frames & Wax Foundation (for the Supers)
  • A Roof (to keep everything dry!)
  • A Crown Board (keeps bees out of the roof space, and has other uses)
  • A Queen Excluder (stops Her Royal Highness from laying eggs in the supers)
  • The Hive Floor with Entrance Block and Varroa Board
  • A Feeder

The Brood Box and Supers have Perspex windows built in so that you can look inside and see the bees working on the comb without disturbing them.

Set does not include bees!

The Suit and Tools
  • A Smoker (used to keep the bees calm, if needed, when you're inspecting them)
  • A Hive Tool (the most important tool a beekeeper can have)
  • A Beekeeping Suit
  • A pair of leather Beekeeping Gloves
The Guide

A lot of the information in the guide provided was gathered and sifted through during the first few years of Buzz Box Founder Mark's beekeeping journey. It is an online resource that is being updated continually and can be referred back to at any stage of the beekeeping career.

We strongly recommended that you seek advice and hands-on training from your local beekeeping association before you begin, to help you keep your bees healthy and avoid common mistakes.
