Hosta Big Mama, 3L
Living up to its name, Hosta Big Mama is one of the larger varieties of hosta, with thick, blue corrugated leaves. Like all hostas, it enjoys the shade, which will allow it to retain its colouration (too much light will turn the leaves green). In early summer it bears spikes of white flowers, adding interest and colour to a shady spot.

Slightly larger than ‘Big Daddy’ this clump forming perennial makes a wonderful specimen planted in a container or in a bed with other hostas or other shade loving plants such as heuchera, dicentra or ferns. Hostas are native to the far east but were introduced to Europe in the 1800s and became instantly popular.
- Flowers: Early summer- white flowers held on strong stems above foliage
- Hardy
- Well drained soil
- South, West and East aspects
- Full sun
- In slug prone areas, plant in a container raised on gravel and water, otherwise in a dappled border. Deadhead spent flowers and removed foliage as it dies back in the autumn.
- Shelter from cold winds. Water once or twice a week around the base of the plant, avoiding the leaves. Little and often is not helpful as it encourages the plant to produce roots closer to the surface searching for moisture.
