- Sow: April – May
- Harvest: Bulbs September – October (leaves available from July)
- Soil: Moist, fertile, well‑drained soil
- Aspect: Full sun to part shade
- Sowing: Sow seeds 2 cm deep in drills about 30–45 cm (12–18″) apart. Seeds should be sown directly in situ as fennel does not like root disturbance; thin seedlings to 25–30 cm (10–12″) once large enough to handle.
Water well until plants are established. As the swollen stems begin to develop, gradually mound soil up around them to preserve bulb whiteness and sweetness. Avoid transplanting to minimise root shock. Regular watering and a fertile site encourage uniform bulb formation.
