Details
  • Sow: May – June (direct outdoors or under cover)
  • Harvest: November – February (depending on sowing date and weather)
Planting
  • Soil: Moist, fertile and well‑drained
  • Aspect: Full sun to light shade
  • Sow seeds thinly in shallow drills 1.5 cm deep in a well‑prepared seedbed. Alternatively, start seeds in seed trays under glass at around 13 °C, then harden off before transplanting.
  • Spacing: Once seedlings are established, transplant or thin to approx. 45–60 cm (18–24″) between plants and rows.
Care

Kale benefits from regular moisture during establishment and regular harvesting of outer leaves promotes continued growth. It’s highly frost‑tolerant and will keep producing nutritious new foliage throughout winter, especially when cut and come again. Protect young plants from caterpillars with fine mesh if needed.
