notes

Superbly elegant and exotic looking, the goblet shaped, burgundy coloured flowers of Magnolie Genie create great impact as they appear, borne on bare branches in late spring. The glossy, mid-green leaves of this deciduous shrub are elliptical, and create a compact, columnar shrub that is perfect in a small or urban garden, or in a mixed border.

INSIGHTS

Magnolias are native to Southern China, but this variety was the successful result of a twelve-year breeding programme by Vance Hooper in New Zealand. Magnolias evolved very early, before bees, so were pollinated by beetles attracted by the scent of the flowers.
