INSIGHTS
Magnolias are native to Southern China, but this variety was the successful result of a twelve-year breeding programme by Vance Hooper in New Zealand. Magnolias evolved very early, before bees, so were pollinated by beetles attracted by the scent of the flowers.
DETAILS
Flowers: Dramatic, lightly scented flowers emerge from furry buds from late spring onwards. After flowering cone-like seed pods develop containing bright red seeds.

CARE
Prune if necessary in midsummer to remove dead, damaged, diseased or badly placed branches. Apply mulch in early spring. Protect from cold wind.
