The light skin and creamy flesh of Maris Peer makes it a popular choice, as does its good flavour. It is particularly good for boiling because it is less likely to split, making it excellent not just for plain boiling but for salads, chips and roasting. Plant these Autumn potatoes as soon as possible after purchase, for cropping of new potatoes from November onwards.

  • Summer planting seed potatoes
  • Potatoes should be ready for harvest in six weeks from planting, or after flowering. Harvest as required, remainder can be left in situ for up to a month.
Planting
  • If planting in containers: use good quality compost. Place 10cm of compost in the base of the container, then evenly space three tubers, before adding another 10cm of compost on top.
  • If planting into the ground: dig over the area, removing any weeds and incorporate well-rotted compost. Plant 10-13cm deep, 20-23cm apart in rows 50cm apart.
Care
  • If planting in containers: Keep compost moist but be careful not to overwater. Add more compost to cover once plants reach 10cm in height, and repeat once plants have grown through. Continue to repeat this until container is full. Keep in frost-free area for Christmas harvesting.
  • If planting in open ground: Keep well watered but avoid splashing leaves to avoid blight. When plants get to 10cm in height, draw earth up the sides. In sheltered gardens, using extra earth and straw for insulation may be sufficient to protect from frost until Christmas. In colder areas or those with wet and heavy soil, it is better to lift crops by the end of October.
