Book signing and Demonstration with Rachel Dein
Join us in the Reading Room from 2pm - 4pm to meet artist and author Rachel Dein as she introduces her inspiring and insightful new book 'Casting Flowers: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Beautiful Botanical Art', alongside a live demonstration and her Burford exclusive collection of casts created with botanical cuttings from our founders' garden.
Rachel Dein is a botanical artist who works predominantly in plaster and concrete. Based in north London, her distinctive style came about from a glassblowing workshop while studying for her Fine Art degree. Upon following instructions to press shapes into wet sand prior to pouring molten glass into the debossed surface, Dein was left captivated by the astonishing detail that casting provided. Since this pivotal discovery, Dein has embarked on a highly successful career which has led to numerous successful commissions including The Dorchester, the National Trust and Loewe, and has exhibited widely across the UK.
Botanical bas-relief is an innovative technique, developed by artist Rachel Dein, where flowers and plants are cast in plaster, providing the ability to capture the intricate beauty of every season. In ‘Casting Flowers’, Rachel offers step-by-step instructions for projects as small as a single stem or as complex as a field of wildflowers, with information covering what plants work best in botanical casts, and which to avoid; how to arrange flowers and stems to make well-balanced artistic compositions, as well as tips on creating unique pieces of artwork as mementos of a season or records of special occasions. A perfect gift for yourself or a loved one contemplating getting a little creative, and an inspiring glimpse into Rachel's creative process, 'Casting Flowers' is a joy to dip into.
Last summer, we were fortunate to have a very special visitor to the Burford Farmhouse, artist Rachel Dein. In the last throws of September sunshine our Creative Director, Louise, opened the gate to her garden, and was joined by Rachel to snip from home grown beauties, ready to cast for our latest exclusive Rachel Dein for Burford Garden Co. collection.
Preserving the intricate details of beauty from last summer's blooms, Rachel has cast a unique and personal collection of flowers grown at home here in Oxfordshire. Available to view alongside a live demonstration with Rachel, Saturday 25th October will be the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of creativity with flowers and casting.
"Rachel Dein has distilled the flowers’ essence into her tiles, each one the memory of nature itself."
