notes

Cornus sanguinea Anny's Winter Orange is a cultivar of the native, deciduous Dogwood, noted for its colour. In autumn the foliage flushes a rich red; once the leaves drop the superb fiery-toned stems are revealed, offering winter colour and a wonderful backdrop for spring bulbs. Recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.

Insights

As Dogwood is a native plant, the flowers - while not particularly startling - are highly attractive to native pollinators.

Details

Flowers: From March - April, insignificant white flowers appear, appreciated by native pollinators, once fertilised these will develop into black, inedible berries, sometimes called ‘dog berries’.

Planting
  • Moist, well drained soil
  • Full sun, partial shade

Care

Extremely vigorous, this dogwood will spread by suckering. To keep the shrub compact and to encourage colourful young shoots, prune hard in March every few years.
