Also known as Cogon grass Rubra, this deciduous clump forming grass bears erect spears of green grass that have bright red tips in summer, living up to its alternate name of Japanese blood grass! As an ornamental grass, it adds colour and movement to the garden, with narrow, silvery white flower spikes appearing in mid summer. Foliage is retained from March to the first frosts, turning translucent as it matures, before dying back.

Native to Africa and Asia, Imperata cylindrica has traditionally been used for weaving bags and mats, and for thatching roofs. Its tough, fibrous leaves make it ideal for these purposes, especially in rural communities.

- Well drained, light soil
- South, East or West facing
- Full sun or partial sunlight
- Borderline hardy
- Plant in full sun for the best red colouration
- May need winter protection in colder areas- mulch roots with straw to protect from frost
- Cut back to the ground in February to encourage new growth
- Likes moist soil so water during dry weather, especially if planted in a container
- Protect from strong, cold wind
