notes

New for 2026 from Raymond Evison, the compact, large- flowered climber, Clematis ‘Queen's Nurse, EviGsy159’ bears blooms of a deep pink, with paler edges and creamy anthers. Repeat flowering, from base to tip, the flowers begin in late spring before taking a break, returning in late summer. The flowers from the older wood are almost solid in colour, whereas the blooms from new growth show a distinctive deep pink bar with lighter pink edged tepals. The compact form is ideal for container gardening or for growing at the front or mid border on an obelisk.

Insights

The Queen’s Institute of Community Nursing (QICN) traces its origins to 1887., with a founding donation from Queen Victoria. In 1926, council member Elsie Wagg introduced the idea of opening gardens to raise funds. This concept grew into the independent National Garden Scheme, now QICN’s most significant long-term funder. Today, QICN is recognised as the oldest continuously running charity, continuing its mission to ensure high-quality community nursing is available to all, whenever and wherever it is needed, and this clematis is named in its honour.

Care
  • Clematis like full sun or partial shade and moist, but well-drained soil, with their roots in the shade. For this, plant the crown 5-8cm (2-3in) beneath the soil, ideally shaded by other plants.
  • Alternatively layer stones on the surface of the soil, which protects the roots from the sun and from drying out.
  • Group Raymond Evison for pruning - reduce all stems down to 15cm (6in) of soil level in late winter/early spring.
  • Can be a skin irritant and harmful to pets if ingested
