Features

notes

A highly decorative grass, Hakonechloa macra Aureola forms a clump of wonderfully arching linear foliage. In summer the leaves, with their bright yellow background, are striated with green; in autumn the vivid colour takes on a rich, reddish tone. Ideally plant in clumps or drifts on the edge of borders or in containers to soften hard lines.

Insights

This compelling ornamental grass has its roots in the moist, mountainous and woodland areas of Central Japan. It is named after Mount Hakone, a mountain in the Kanagawa Prefecture which overlooks Mount Fuji. The refined detail of the foliage lends it to planting alongside large-leafed perennials such as hostas or alongside clipped Buxus or sculpture.
