notes

Also known as the ‘first aid’ plant, due to its soothing sap, Aloe Vera is an attractive houseplant that can be moved outside during the summer months. The evergreen succulent hails from the hot, arid parts of the world, so it can cope with conditions over 13 degrees. As it stores water in its leaves, overwatering is a killer, but generally it’s a low maintenance, easy plant to look after. Hessian not included, supplied in plastic nursery pot.

Insights

There are about 450 species in the genus Aloe, ranging in size from miniature to tall trees. They are mostly long-lived plants with some specimens said to be over 200 years old. Their medicinal properties were first noted by the Ancient Egyptians and continue to be widely used in cosmetics and skin care today.

Details
  • Flowering: December to May IF conditions are right (after 4 years old and unlikely indoors)
Planting
  • Position: Indirect sunlight
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, aerated potting soil mix
  • Terracotta pot recommended to avoid root rot
Care
  • Do not water over winter, and water sparingly the rest of the year only when soil is dry
  • Likes to be in a bright spot but too much sun will burn the leaves
  • If moving outside over summer, gradually introduce it to more light
  • If harvesting the sap, cut near to base and choose a mature leaf – squeeze out the gel  - can cause irritation in some people so handle with care
