notes

Also know as Baby's Breath, Gypsophila 'Covent Garden' produces clouds of delicate, pure white flowers perched on fine, airy stems and lacy foliage. It is prized for adding texture to the border, and as a classic filler for cut flower arrangements.

From heritage favourites to modern hybrids, their varieties are chosen for reliability, quality, and strong garden performance, whether you’re sowing a border, kitchen garden or wild patch.

  • Sow: March – June (direct outdoors) or September – October for flowering the following year.
  • Flowers: June - August
  • Hardy annual
Planting
  • Soil: Well‑drained, fertile soil
  • Aspect: Full sun to light shade
  • Sow seeds 1 cm deep directly into the final flowering site; rake in or cover lightly with fine soil. Once seedlings are established, thin to 20–30 cm (8–12″) apart to reduce overcrowding
  • Seeds sown in September–October can overwinter and flower earlier the following season
Care

Keep soil evenly moist during establishment but avoid waterlogged conditions, Baby’s Breath prefers steady moisture without saturation. Support slender stems lightly in exposed sites to prevent flopping as blooms develop. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage clean appearance and reduce self-seeding
