Insights
Bergenia was named in 1784 after the botanist Karl von Bergen. It is native to Siberia and Mongolia which explains why they tolerate low temperatures and a coating of snow. The Elephant’s Ears name is self explanatory due to the appearance of the foliage, but Pigsqueaks comes from the noise made by the leaves if rubbed together.
