notes

A wonderful herbaceous perennial for filling in any gaps in the border, Geranium pratense Boom Chocolatta produces ravishing pale purple flowers throughout the whole summer. The Chocolatta reference in the name comes from the superbly cut, bronze tinted foliage that turns an almost chocolate brown in strong sunshine.

Insights

Before you even plant this delightful hardy geranium, it has a romantic flavour because the ‘pratense’ in its name means ‘of the meadow’, so it carries with it summer connotations. Native geraniums are known as Cranesbills, and in common with them this Geranium is a wonderful source of nectar and pollen for native pollinators, especially bees.

Details

Flowers appear in spring and will last until late summer, especially if you cut back after first major flowering. The foliage will be more bronzed if in bright sunshine.

Planting
  • Well drained moist, fertile soil
  • All aspects
  • Full sun, partial shade
Care

Low maintenance, so this plant needs little attention beyond ensuring that the roots are never waterlogged. Mulch in early spring.
