- Sow: February – April
- Flowers: June - October
- Half-hardy annual
- Soil: Well‑drained, fertile soil
- Aspect: Full sun to light shade
- Indoors: Sow seeds thinly in trays of seed compost, covering lightly with fine compost. Keep at about 20 °C until germination (about 14–21 days). Harden off seedlings before transplanting to flowering position, spacing plants about 25–30 cm (10–12in) apart.
Salvia coccinea enjoys consistent moisture during establishment, and regular watering in dry spells will support strong flowering. Removing faded flower spikes (deadheading) encourages continued bloom through the season. These plants are generally low‑maintenance and suited to beds, borders and containers alike.
