Features

notes
Despite bearing the rather charming common name of Bastard Balm, Melittis Royal Velvet Distinction still manages to delight. This herbaceous perennial is clump forming, its scalloped green foliage and stems are covered in tiny hairs and emit a slight scent, reminiscent of honey. The flowers are orchid like, with a white upper lip and a dark purple lower lip acting as a landing strip for bees, which love this nectar/ pollen rich flower.
Insights

Melittis Royal Velvet Distinction is a member of the mint family, native to the woodlands of Europe, making it the perfect plant for a shady spot in the garden. The name Melittis is derived from the Greek Melitta, which is in turn from Melissa (a bee).
