- Sow: February – April (under cover or outdoors)
- Plant Out: April – May (after hardening off)
- Harvest: August - September (ready for storage)
- Soil: Well‑drained, fertile, moist soil
- Aspect: Full sun
- Under cover: Sow seeds on the surface of seed sowing compost and lightly cover with vermiculite or fine compost at around 14 °C. Grow on until seedlings are ready to pot on.
- Outdoors: Sow thinly in shallow drills about 1.5 cm (½″) deep with rows spaced 30 cm (12″) apart once soil warms.
- Spacing: Once established or planted out, leave about 15 cm (6″) between plants for good bulb development.
Keep soil moist but not waterlogged during establishment. Thin plants to the recommended spacing to avoid overcrowding. Watch for onion fly; removing thinnings promptly can help reduce pest attraction. Feed with balanced fertiliser mid‑season to support bulb growth.
