- Sow: March – June
- Harvest: From spring onwards once established
- Soil: Well‑drained, fertile soil
- Aspect: Full sun to light shade
- Indoors: Sow seeds about 0.5 cm deep in small pots or trays under cover. Prick out seedlings to around 5 cm (2″) apart once large enough, then harden off before planting out.
- Outdoors: Sow later into a prepared seedbed in shallow drills and thin to give space as seedlings grow.
- Spacing: Transplant or thin to about 40–50 cm (16–20″) apart to allow room for growth.
Sage becomes evergreen and woody with age; regular harvesting of leaves encourages fresh new growth. Cut back stems in late winter or early spring to keep plants compact and prevent them becoming straggly. Once established, sage is drought tolerant and benefits from a sunny position with good air flow.
